Have
you been affected by school closings? Are your children learning?
We all know that remote learning has technical and motivational problems. Even
if the technology is available, how do you keep your child on task?
Three years before the closings, the Enabling Support Foundation (ESF) was
developing a new approach to reading called Kusoma. Before the virus hit, children
using Kusoma were starting Primary 1 with reading and writing skills. ESF
was preparing to introduce the program into more schools but they were all
closed.
Using the Kusoma approach to reading is not only effective, but it is easier to
use than the traditional approach. We taught parents how to Kusoma and
guided them via email and WhatsApp. In less than 2 months, over 900
children in Kenya and Uganda were reading better than they ever had.
The Enabling Support Foundation has decided to open the program on a temporary
basis at least until schools re-open. Those who are accepted will be
given a guest membership in the Peace Flame Network which allows email
access to those using Kusoma, access to the public documents and videos, and
the Kusoma app for Android which can teach reading vocabulary to babies.
They will be invited to WhatsApp groups where they can speak with teachers and
parents about Kusoma and view the videos showing the approach in action.
As school await reopening in January, are your children ready to learn?
